It started with a student, some research, and a simple idea.
Tech4Kidz began in 2024 when Grade 10 student Alex Birch turned a family laptop upgrade into a gift for kids who needed a real computer for school.
Where it began
While doing research, Alex Birch stumbled on statistics that struck her: many children were trying to keep up in school without a computer of their own, often sharing a phone or a device that was never really theirs. A phone can open a link. It cannot hold a semester of homework the way a laptop can.
Her family was already upgrading their laptops. Alex suggested they donate the ones they were replacing to families in need. Those first machines were wiped carefully and placed with children through Simcoe Muskoka Children’s Aid (Family Connexions). That is where Tech4Kidz began.
The household laptops ran out faster than the requests. The idea grew: when a company refreshes hardware, a working laptop can become a child’s computer for school. Today Tech4Kidz invites companies across Ontario to take that same step.
A child cannot learn their best on a phone alone.
In Canada, many homes with children have fewer computers than people who need them. In lower-income homes, about one in four go online by phone only. In higher-need Ontario schools, a meaningful share of students still lack a computer at home. Those numbers are not abstract. They are kids trying to keep up.
Today Tech4Kidz picks up working company laptops in Ontario, completes a careful second wipe with an IT partner, and places devices with children who need a real computer for homework and hope. Corporate partners have already shown what a refresh can become when it ends on a child’s desk.

How a laptop reuse program starts
Who started a laptop reuse program for children in Ontario?
Alex Birch began Tech4Kidz in Grade 10 in 2024. While doing research, she stumbled on statistics about children without computers. Her family was upgrading their laptops, and she suggested donating them to families in need. Those first machines went to children through Simcoe Muskoka Children’s Aid / Family Connexions. The program now welcomes corporate donations across Ontario.
Why do companies give used laptops to children?
Because a working laptop turns homework from a scramble into a chance to succeed. Tech4Kidz only receives corporate donations. When a company refreshes hardware, those machines can go to kids who need them through a clear path: pickup, second wipe, and placement.
How can someone reach Tech4Kidz?
Email info@tech4kidz.ca or use the forms on our Contact and How it works pages. We are glad to hear from companies and partners. We only receive corporate laptop donations.
